Remembering Gettysburg

Cornelia Oatis Hancock (1840-1926) was a Quaker, born in Salem, N.J. As a nurse in the immediate aftermath of the battle of Gettysburg, she provided a view of the field that few people saw. Clearly moved by the men she was serving, she wrote,

I feel very thankful that this was a successful battle; the spirit of the men is so high that many of the poor fellows said today, “What is an arm or leg to whipping Lee out of Penn.” I would get on first rate if they would not ask me to write to their wives; that I cannot do without crying, which is not pleasant to either party. I do not mind the sight of blood, have seen limbs taken off and was not sick at all.

I have been using the 7pm till 11am fasting Diet for a few months now and I’m having great results with it . As always you should check with your Doctor before trying diet plan. I was a sugar addict and a late night stacker , I’m happy to say both are gone and my will power returned.

Bells Mill Covered Bridge , Westmoreland County ,Pa.

I started with a Covered Bridge close to my home .. just proving you don't have to roam far to have an adventure .This Bridge is still heavily used today and is a important short cut route when traveling to and from my grandaughter's school . This picture was taken in the pouring rain but I think it just gives it Character . If your in the area you really should check this out .. sadly these historic pieces of history are disappearing from floods .. fires , vandalism or just fallen into disrepair . did I mention .. it's the LAST one in Westmoreland County ?

This is the only covered bridge in Westmoreland County, the sides are covered with barn red horizontal clapboard siding, painted inside and outside; the roof consists of cedar shakes and the deck has lengthwise planking in wide tire track areas that are laid over crosswise planking.  There are no side openings other than the rather wide, typical, lengthwise eave openings. The entire structure rests on stone and mortar abutments that are reinforced with concrete both at the ground and road level. The bridge also has stone and mortar wing walls that are protected with heavy wooden guardrails.

Built in 1850, the Bells Mill Bridge is a burr arch truss design, 13 feet wide and 104 feet long.  The bridge is in daily use connecting South Huntingdon and Sewickley Townships.  The bridge was designed by Daniel McCain who was also the contractor.  This bridge was placed on the National Register in 1979. 

It is located on Bells Mill Road where it crosses Sewickley creek.  Bells Mill Road intersects PA Route 136 approximately 3.5 miles East of West Newton or 3.5 miles West of Madison.
